Killing German Ants Verboten
Wednesday June 18, 2003
The Scotsman suggests that killing ants is punishable by law in Germany. According to the UK report, German foresters value ants for eating insects which attack trees. A high ant population can lessen the use of costly and environmentally unfriendly woodland spraying aimed at pests the ants prey on.
"Indeed, ant protection is an important issue for german foresters, but the ant species living in the woods are quite different from those living in gardens (which are mentioned in the article). The most protected species is Formica rufa (Big Red Ant) and some other species which live in dead trees." - Placodus, German Forester - About Forestry Forum
