The South Carolina Forestry Commission is granting Smokey Bear a leave of absence from duty. His help seems to be costing man-hours that are needed in areas of higher priority. A SCFC spokesperson said on Friday that state agency employees are advised, "When you get Smokey requests, you should explain that staffing and budget issues have forced us to narrow our focus, concentrating on more essential services".
The Commission has several Smokey costumes that state employees use at school functions and festivals. "Be polite, be understanding, but be firm: We do not loan the Bear." The State of South Carolina will not loan their costumes.
