Healthy Forest Initiative
Monday August 11, 2003
Millions of acres of U.S. public land and their surrounding communities are at an increased risk for wildfire. When coupled with seasonal drought, these "unhealthy" and usually unmanaged forests are vulnerable to unnaturally severe wildfires.
The Bush Administration announced a policy last year called the "Healthy Forest Initiative". This policy has a two-pronged approach to making unhealthy forests healthy. One is by "reducing unnecessary regulatory obstacles" that hamper forest management. The other is by encouraging procedures for forest thinning and restoration projects.
Bush is taking a large part of his working vacation during August to hype the policy. His stops include Arizona, Colorado and California. The Healthy Forest Initiative makes up a major portion of his environmental platform.
