Eight Oregon Firefighters Killed
Tuesday August 26, 2003
Firefighting is a deadly business. You can become a fatality on or off an actual fire.
Eight firefighters were killed returning to their home base in Roseburg, Oregon after the van they were in collided with a tractor-trailer and burned on impact. The men had been battling a wildfire in the Boise National Forest.
The van slamed head-on into a truck while trying to pass on a curve and crossing a double yellow line. The two tractor-trailer truck passengers survived.
The firefighters were employed by First Strike Environmental, a Roseburg contractor that offers wildland interface fire response personnel, equipment, and management teams certified at both federal and state levels.
The team involved in the wreck finished its work Saturday on the South Fork fire outside Cascade, Idaho. The 6,950-acre wildfire which broke out on August 11, is now 100 percent contained.
