Drinking Attributed to Firefighters Death
Wednesday October 8, 2003
I reported in August on eight Oregon firefighters killed in a fiery crash while returning to base from a fire in the Boise National Forest. Their van slammed head-on into a truck while passing a car on a curve after crossing a double yellow line. The two tractor-trailer truck passengers survived.
First Strike Management, a contact firefighting company, employed the crew.
KATU 2 - Portland, Oregon reports that an investigation by the Oregon Department of Forestry has determined that alcohol was involved in the crash and included the driver of the van. ODF quickly suspended nine First Strike crews and forbids any crews to be dispatched to fires. "First Strike must provide two-tiered training in alcohol and drug awareness for its personnel in order to resume working as a firefighting contractor."
