Illegal birch bark stripping has become a problem
Grand Rapids, Minnesota: Birch bark stripping is not illegal if you have permission from a private property owner or a permit from the USFS to strip on federal land. The problem now is that birch bark stripping is now being done without permission.
“You would think that people could get bark from loggers", says John Zasada, local artist and teacher of birch bark craft. “What I personally recommend, is that people search out places that will be logged or cleared—then, it doesn't matter if you strip the trees”. Read more...
