Tree Wellness Quiz

Monday August 14, 2006
Millions of trees will be planted over the spring and summer growing season. Bad news is, many of the trees will not be planted correctly and only given minimal care over the next year. Please briefly review my planting instructions and quiz for the best possible tree planting outcome.
Follow my planting instructions in Planting Balled Saplings and take the tree wellness test to see how up on planting your really are. Taking this test could save you both money and time and will definately give your tree a head start.

Greg,

I see several red flags! Your tree needs full sun on days that are comfortably above freezing or are less than 90 temp.

You also do not need to fertilize with MG every time you water. The tree only needs marginal food once or twice a year that is developed for conifers. I would also water much less often but wet until water drains from container.

You also should have repotted at least once and the pot should adequately drain. Any or all of these things can cause you problems…

I totally disagree with not removing the burlap – you do not need to pull if off from under the tree once it is in the hole – but it should be rolled back and cut off if possible. Too many times I have seen the burlap restrict the egress of roots from it – especially if the soil is particularly heavy or if the tree is not watered enough,
