Discussion: Where Can I Find a Linden Oak?

Saturday January 13, 2007
"We are in the process of Landscaping a project that was once owned by a wealthy family. We understand this family loved and grew a "Linden Oak". These trees were grown and shipped up north for their high quality wood. The new owners would like to have these trees installed in the development. There is not a Linden Oak tree, but I hoping that someone might know or have knowledge of this nickname. Any information would be great." - Greenstate

(1) William Dufford says:

The oldest white oak is found in maryland and called the Linden Oak. Perhaps more interesting in the Greek myth of Baucis & Philemon, found in Ovid’s Metamorphosis, there is an old couple who are rewarded for their hospitality to beggars who are Jupiter & Mercury in disguise by being granted a wish. The gods have transformed their house into a temple and after discussing together they ask to serve the temple as stewards and to die at the same moment. Years later they turn into trees at the same moment, Baucis(female) into a Linden and Philemon(male) into an oak. There branches intertwine and their trunks grow together so closely that they are said to be two trees with one trunk. Perhaps there is a clue here to the name Linden Oak
