Summer weather always complicates the life of newly planted seedlings by competition from weeds. If you were wise enough to mulch each tree, weed problems may be of minor concern and much easier to deal with. If you did not mulch, you either need to pull weeds away from the base of the trees or use some chemical help on larger jobs. Mulching is the most beneficial thing a home owner (and even a larger tree manager) can do for the health of a young tree. Mulches are materials placed on the soil surface to improve soil structure, oxygen levels, temperature and moisture availability. Properly applied, mulch can give landscapes a handsome, well-groomed appearance.
Which of the various types of mulch will best suit your needs? To make that decision, Landscaping Guide David Beaulieu says you need to consider the qualities of the different types of mulch and start weighing their pros and cons.
