Yarmouth, Maine - Yarmouth is mourning the impending death of a 200 plus year-old American elm named "Herbie". The Portland Press Herald reports that the tree's caretaker and the "town's current tree warden, Debra Hopkins, concluded this summer that Herbie would have to come down". An attack of Dutch elm disease is killing the tree.
Herbie the elm is not just any American elm and is in the record books as being the largest Ulmus americana in Maine and all of New England. People are being asked to pay their last respects before the tree is cut in 2010.
