Binomial nomenclature is the preferred scientific system of naming species of living things, including trees. By giving each tree a special name composed of two parts, common names can be avoided and the probability of accurate identification in scientific literature is increased. Promoted by botanist Carolus Linnaeus in 1753, this taxonomic labeling system formally identifies, by Latin name, a tree's genus and species.
