The compass is probably a forester's most used tool. It gets him/her to point A and back to the truck. I've used both Silva Ranger and Suunto KB compasses over a forestry career that spans 30 plus years. So, I was naturally curious about what compass type and brand other foresters use. Boy did I find out!
Seems there is not much debate over which compass is most popular with field foresters. It's the Silva Ranger 15. The price may have made the difference. In a forestry forum discussion, the Silva Ranger was the overall favorite. The Suunto KB and Brunton, which are significantly more expensive, were the other desirable compasses mentioned but a bit behind the Silva Ranger.
