Tropical rainforests exist only within the World's equatorial regions and are major "harbors" of genetic diversity. These forests are now home to 50 percent of all the living things on Earth yet the area covers less than 2% of the Earth's surface. There are increasingly fewer of these forests and the remaining tropical rainforest realms are down from an estimated 12% of the estimated world forest cover of pre-history.
