* A tree is defined as a woody plant which at maturity is 20 feet or more in height, with a single trunk, unbranched for at least several feet above the ground and having a more or less definite crown.

Clue #1:  One of the first trees to appear on burned and logged areas.

 

Clue #2: This intolerant species has a very limited natural range.

 

Clue #3: The tree has nitrogen-fixing nodules on its roots and the nitrogen content of its leaves are high.

 

Clue #4: The tree is monoecious and bears separate male and female flowers in late spring.

 

Clue #5: Never far from water, the tree is a prolific seeder and occurs in pure stands or in mix with coastal conifers.  It is a valuable commercial hardwood.

 

 

The tree was Red Alder - Alnus rubra
