How to Prepare For a Wildfire
From your Forestry Guide
Protect you and your personal property from wildfire.
Time Required: One half day
Here's How:
- Close all openings to your house and any other structures on your property. That includes all doors, windows and vents
- Close any window glass protection like shutters, heavy drapes and blinds.
- Test your water system to include valves, hose and pump.
- Remove light, flammable curtains from the windows.
- Fill buckets and other large containers with water.
- Raise a ladder to the roof near a hose bib and take hose to roof.
- Bring flammable outdoor furniture indoors.
- Put as many vehicles as can be accommodated inside the garage.
- Park all vehicles, including any in the garage, so that they are headed toward the evacuation route.
- Cover windows with aluminum foil or other heat-reflective material.
Tips:
- Firewise your landscape by keeping trees pruned, maintaining "fuel breaks", taking out "ladder" fuels and limiting vegetation to 30' around your home.
