Side-boring Backcut

Definition: Intentional alteration of the standard backcutting procedure to prevent loss of control of a tree and/or its barber-chairing. Side-boring is an effective technique of reducing the amount of holding wood required to fall a tree. The nose of the bar is pushed into the tree behind the face and 2" above the horizontal cut.
