Central African Republic's Rainforests

By Steve Nix, About.com

Central African Rep. ForestFAO

Location:

The Republic is in Central Africa, north of Democratic Republic of the Congo and south of Chad. The closed rainforests are mainly in the south.

The Resource:

"The basically semi-deciduous closed rainforests of the south-west and, to a lesser degree, of the Bangassou region form a relatively homogeneous formation corresponding to the northern fringe of Congo-basin forests and the transition between these and the forests of south-eastern Cameroon." - FAO

Cause of Problem:

Economically speaking, this semi-deciduous forest is one of the richest in Africa. However logging and transport expenses are high and, to some extent, may be protecting the forest. The government is protecting large portions in the south.

Other Envirnmental Issues:

"tap water is not potable; poaching has diminished its reputation as one of the last great wildlife refuges; desertification; deforestation." - CIA

Rhett A. Butler's Assessment :

"Subsistence agriculture, diamond mining, and forestry form the bulk of the economy of the Central African Republic. Burdened with poor infrastructure, a largely unskilled work force, and poor economic policies, the Central African Republic is several years away from any sort of development." Read More
