Sequoia sempervirens is the sole living species of the genus Sequoia in the cypress family Cupressaceae. Common names include Coast Redwood and California Redwood.

Redwood is an evergreen, long-lived, monoecious tree living for up to 2,200 years. This species includes some of the tallest trees on Earth, reaching up to 380 feet in height and 26 feet in diameter at breast height (DBH). It is native to coastal California and the southwestern corner of Oregon within the United States.

The Common North American Redwood

Leaves: persistent, decussate, scale-like to awl-shaped.

Bark: reddish, peeling and vertically furrowed.

Fruit: Woody, fleshy cones.
