Earth Day Network
Who founded Earth Day?: Former U.S. Senator from Wisconsin, Gaylord Nelson developed the Earth Day idea. Leaving the Senate in 1981, Nelson now serves as counselor of The Wilderness Society and continues to promote Earth Day.
When was the first Earth Day? : Twenty million participants attended rallies and teach-outs all over the United States in 1970, the first year Earth Day was organized. That first Earth Day was organized by Denis Hayes who is now chair of Earth Day Network.
Is there still an Earth Day? : Yes. Every April 22.
What forest and tree actions are promoted during Earth Day?: Earth Day Network and its partners have established a goal of planting 285 million trees - one for every American - over the next 3 years. Trees Across America is focused on reforesting urban areas, damaged forestlands, wetlands, and areas surrounding key watersheds.
Where is Earth Day promoted? : The day involves tens of thousands of events, from rallies and teach-outs to concerts and earth fairs. It supports environmental awareness in cities throughout the world. You can find an event close to you here.
What does Earth Day try to promote?: There are multiple campaigns going on this Earth Day, 2004. Here are the campaigns:

Campaign for Communities
In this campaign, Earth Day Network and partners are working to register and turn out 1 million new voters in 2004. The goal of this campaign is to establish a connection between environmental progress and civic activism.

Water for Life
The 2 year Water for Life campaign focuses upon water access, health, and usage issues in communities worldwide. The links below have been created to educate others how to conserve and handle water issues across the globe.

Trees Across America
As I have mentioned, this is the only tree centered action campaign for Earth Day and it is sponsored over the next 3 years. I have compiled a short review of Trees Across America.
