forestryADM: not this time of year I hope
jebtaboz: I know them well
forestryADM: Whats the best remedy for em?

jebtaboz: Posteriety I hope
BP: Thanks-the bites got infected
forestryADM: Comeon BP
jebtaboz: I hate the chiggers more than the ticks
forestryADM: I can remember scratching and scratching and my mom made me put on gloves
jebtaboz: At least you can see the ticks
BP: Yep, and I was helping my folks..mom kept her gloves
forestryADM: gloves scratched even better
jebtaboz: Chiggers are a communist ploy to drive folks crazy
BP: True, and they are quite successful
forestryADM: yup
forestryADM: Again the pinestraw
forestryADM: will you do something in 6 months about pinestraw
forestryADM: using your experience and the available pubs
jebtaboz: What do you mean?

jebtaboz: Maybe but I'm still looking for a particular pub

BP AND COLLEGE STUDENTS IN GENERAL, GETS SERIOUS!!!

forestryADM: See ya
forestryADM: BP you were suppose to influence your students to join in chat..
forestryADM: Nobody as of yet huh
BP: Iknow, but haven't had too much luck
BP: The college limits access to the computers after hours
forestryADM: OK but keeptrying
BP: Now that I'm teaching, I'll try again
forestryADM: They have to have puter in dorms or is my daughter the only one
BP: Might be an interesting check on grad students
forestryADM: Maybe she has been giving me the razz
BP: Most undergrads don' have a pc
forestryADM: she has a full internet hook up using the campus network
forestryADM: WHOAAA
BP: Or so they say-
BP: And most live off campus
forestryADM: Starkville aint that behind
forestryADM: I can't imagine an X generationer not having internet access
BP: No, But most of my students are transfers, and get computers their senior year
forestryADM: transfers from jr colleges?
BP: Yeah
BP: And a lot from AL jr colleges
forestryADM: I was one of those...Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Tifton GA
forestryADM: Alabama is eat up with Jr college towns
BP: So is Mississippi
forestryADM: It is pork dished out by George Wallace many years ago
forestryADM: who thought every town should have a college
forestryADM: Bullllloney
BP: I haven't figured out who started it here, but it is pretty much the same
forestryADM: It has hurt the four year system
forestryADM: and education in general IMHO
BP: And the have the legislative power to get the money
forestryADM: God you are right...lobbys running out the ears
BP: Well a lot of my students are not ready for 4year college
BP: Good kids, just not prepared
forestryADM: Nobody will touch the system, students get a poor education, Mississippi State has to become a mother
forestryADM: to kids who are not prepared
forestryADM: I thought Alabama was the only state that had that problem
BP: And the profs get frustrated, 'cause we have to teach basics
forestryADM: I need to ask you something
BP: Go ahead
forestryADM: and it deals with registration of foresters in Alabama and Auburn
BP: Hmm. we have registration here too....
forestryADM: There are kids becoming or trying to become foresters that cant do math nor spell
forestryADM: They have graduated from the forestry school at AU and the University of Georgia
forestryADM: Im sure from Miss State as well
forestryADM: What is the problem in your opinion
BP: Some is the jr. colleges, and some is the emphasis on retaining students
BP: For a while we had huge class numbers, and that meant alot of multiple guess tests
BP: So the didn't get as much practice writing and doing math
BP: The bigger problem I see is the ethics question
forestryADM: I went to a jr college but I got a lot of forestry including dendro and statistics. Do jr colleges offer forestry anymore?
forestryADM: What ethics question?
forestryADM: Keep writing....
BP: Some do, but standards vary
BP: Everything is legal until you get caught
forestryADM: carefull on how you word your stuff here!
BP: We have some schools that we know the studentsare well prepared in math
forestryADM: ok
BP: Good point!
forestryADM: keep going
BP: Actually A lot of the challenge is getting the students to integrate the knowledge they have
forestryADM: Whoa, they either know how to spell or add or they don't
forestryADM: am I not right
BP: You are right, but they get sloppy.
BP: I had a student appeal a grade because I expected him to know how many poundss were in a ton!
BP: And he "won' the points back (the conversion was on the front of the exam).
forestryADM: WE had an Auburn grad that could not determine acreage using a chain
BP: I may have heard about that one, we all hear horror stories
forestryADM: another could not define section, township and range
BP: I worry where these students will end up
forestryADM: How do you make it through college and not know ranger kinda stuff
forestryADM: They become forester
BP: I asked mine to define forestry, and most had never had thought about it!
forestryADM: keep going
BP: I made them write a paper on it (due tomorrow)
BP: It will be interesting to see what I get
forestryADM: What is the answer
forestryADM: make it a good one!
BP: Well, if you check your dictionary, it doesn't really give with what I was taught in siliculture
forestryADM: Webster is not the last word
forestryADM: Is there a dictionary answer?
BP: But, the art of working with people, money, machines, land, timber , and time
BP: Mr. Webster tried to define everything
forestryADM: also the govt
forestryADM: the law
BP: The dictionary may not be right, but it is probably the first place that the public will look something up!
forestryADM: yup
forestryADM: It is getting late but one last question
BP: To me, both the government and the law are people related
forestryADM: yep
BP: OK
forestryADM: Are you proud of kids coming out of major forestry schools in the US...not nec starkeville
BP: Some...our better students are the equal of any (and this is probably true for all schools).

THE SERIOUS DISCUSSION ENDS!!!!

BP: Butlike all professions, we will be judged by the porrtest performers
forestryADM: Hi Jeb
BP: Hi
jebtaboz: Doo-Daaa
jebtaboz: Hi Ya'll
forestryADM: I never thought of that but you are right
forestryADM: the weak link gets the credit
BP: We have a new student services coordinator who is from business and very surprised at the high quality of the students
forestryADM: And Jeb dodahs into the picture
jebtaboz: I'll just wtch and see what you are up to
jebtaboz: watch maybe
forestryADM: do you see them as performing as well as vets or engineers
BP: Hard to say...vets are in grad school
forestryADM: I have heard many a groan about "why I took forestry instead of a more polished profession"
BP: Just "lost" a student to a job at 38K
forestryADM: with no degree?
jebtaboz: Pardon me but forestry is polished in my book!!!
forestryADM: My opinion as well
forestryADM: but not for some
BP: Masters (and an ex-logger to boot)
forestryADM: ok
jebtaboz: Iknow what you are saying too
forestryADM: 38 k right outa school?
BP: Like any profession it is what you make of it.
BP: Yeah....and I should be working on his thesis!
forestryADM: You should tryf for his job
BP: Supply and demand...not too many oerations types out there
BP: Tell me about it!
forestryADM: you got me on a roll for one more question
BP: Ok..but I have one too
forestryADM: are todays kids expecting too much pay right outa school?
BP: Tough one. I think too many expect a mid-level management job with that pay
jebtaboz: Todays kids have no real idea of what is in the world
BP: before thy get the experience
forestryADM: Come on Jeb!
BP: they, I mean
jebtaboz: I'm thinking high school here
forestryADM: gottcha
forestryADM: A few years of dirt work does wonders
BP: Well, we try to preserve childhood, but forget about preparing for adulthood
jebtaboz: college kids should have a more realistic view of their role
jebtaboz: and I think they do
jebtaboz: as a whole
BP: Some do, some just want to move back home and be a county forester
jebtaboz: My generation had vietnam to predispose them to wordly ways
forestryADM: preserving childhood is happening in college? I hope not...
jebtaboz: Those guys taught me alot and I didn't go to young
jebtaboz: just barely
BP: But goes back to earlier preparedness.
forestryADM: like mom and pop
forestryADM: need to be kicked out of the nest and into 'nam
forestryADM: maybe not
jebtaboz: I'm getting depressed here, lets move on
BP: And some need to be just kicked out of the nest...
forestryADM: go for it jeb
jebtaboz: how about that pinestraw
forestryADM: All this will be on the record
BP: I will say (on a better note) that most of the students want to learn
jebtaboz: just kidding
forestryADM: screw pinestraw!
forestryADM: I like your planting pepper under pines
jebtaboz: Hey it ain't mine
BP: Are ya'll running into seedling shortages?
jebtaboz: wished it was
forestryADM: Whoa
forestryADM: thought you had pines
jebtaboz: yes we are here
forestryADM: don't think so in Alabama
BP: pine seedlings..just had a call asking
BP: Landowner is on next years waiting list
jebtaboz: yes I do have pines, no I don't do peppers
forestryADM: ok...
forestryADM: Seems you have to order now to get next years trees
jebtaboz: More research as the crow flies
jebtaboz: Our state nursery sold out in august
forestryADM: keep us abreast
jebtaboz: I'm getting some from Texas this year
jebtaboz: SEEDLINGS that is
forestryADM: speaking of breast, grow chickens under them trees next year
BP: I keep hearing about agro forestry
jebtaboz: too many are mistaken for foresters
forestryADM: me too
forestryADM: seedlings or foresters
jebtaboz: Wave of the future for the brave
forestryADM: sorry seedlings or chickens I am confused
jebtaboz: but too much of a good thing does equal BAD
forestryADM: what do you mean
BP: Like paulownia
jebtaboz: I just confused myself
forestryADM: yup HA
jebtaboz: Pine straw, catnip echinacae etc
forestryADM: why are these bad
forestryADM: ifen you can make money
jebtaboz: we have one producer in the state producing any one of these, if more folk get involved the market crashes
forestryADM: makes sense
jebtaboz: That is what I mean
forestryADM: ok
jebtaboz: I'm all for it
forestryADM: Like paulownia
jebtaboz: just don't know what "it "is
forestryADM: my biggest selling feature and full of bull
