A Forester's Career FAQ

Do foresters have to be licensed?

Fifteen states have mandatory licensing or voluntary registration requirements that a forester must meet in order to acquire the title "professional forester" and practice forestry in the state.  In many cases you do not have to be licensed if you work on federal, state or industry lands that employ you.  You will be expected to have a license or be registered if you deal with the public and call yourself a professional forester.

Licensing or registration requirements vary by state, but usually entail completing a 4-year degree in forestry, a minimum period of training time, and passing an oral or written exam.  These exams are generally all encompassing and hit the highlights expected of a graduate forester.  You can get a good idea on registration test questions by studying a comprehensive glossary on forestry terms.
