American Beech (Fagus grandifolia):  Beech is a long-lived tree with smooth skin-like bark (often initialed) and creature-like surface roots.   Early settlers stuffed freshly fallen leaves into mattresses because of the "grateful and wholesome smell...They harbor no vermin, are very elastic, and may be replenished annually without cost."
