Crater Lake in May of 1976 - seventy four years after
obtaining park status
Western hemlock, firs and pines of Crater Lake: Crater Lake,
near Klamath Falls, Oregon, was designated a National Park on May 22, 1902. The
winter brings some of the heaviest snowfall in the country, averaging 533 inches per year.
This 6 mile wide caldera was created by the eruption and collapse of Mt. Mazama
almost 7,000 years ago. The photo above was taken along the twenty-mile circle of cliffs.
