Eastern Cottonwood in the Mississippi Delta:  A member of the willow family, Populus deltoides or eastern cottonwood is one of the largest eastern hardwoods and a favored shade tree.  Cottonwood is also one of the fastest-growing native trees in the Mississippi Valley.  It is not uncommon for the tree to grow twelve feet in the first growing season and continue to average five feet annually on a favorable site.
