Sorbus americana on Grandfather Mountain: Grandfather Mountain, elevation 5, 964 feet, has been a wildlife sanctuary and nature preserve for over 100 years. This western North Carolina attraction and conservation effort is privately owned and operated. There is an admission fee but well worth the price. This American Mountain-ash is abundant on the mountain and throughout the North American Blue Ridge.
Mountain-ash is a beautiful but small tree with autumn-developing fruit. The tree is most often seen in the eastern United States at elevations over 3000 feet. The berries are eaten by birds and the foliage, twigs and fragrant inner bark is a favorite moose browse. The scientific name is Sorbus americana.
