Appalachian ginseng roots: "sang" collecting season starts in many areas in September. The plants can still be found with leaves but the plant has already gone to seed. In most states, it is legal to collect ginseng on private property but only with permission. You must have a state license to buy ginseng.
You are not permitted to hunt ginseng on any federal property where
the plant is considered "site sensitive". There is also a push by the
USF&WS to only allow harvesting of plants older than five years on federal
land..
