The extraordinary Tallulah Gorge and river
The Tallulah Gorge: This gorge is nicknamed "Niagara of the South". It is one of North America's deepest gorges east of the Rocky Mountains and has been a tourist destination since the pre-Civil War era. The arrival of a railroad in 1882 brought people to hotels in the overlooking town of Tallulah Falls.
The Tallulah River hosts a fantastic series of falls through the gorge. The timber type is mostly oak-hickory with hemlocks and Virginia pine hugging the slopes and river banks. The Georgia Power Company completed a Tallulah River dam project started in 1910. This dam controls Tallulah River water flow.
