Dirr's Trees and Shrubs for Warm Climates - An Illustrated Encyclopedia
Dr. Michael A. Dirr

Guide Rating -
Pros  •  Dr. Dirr's encyclopedias recommend the perfect tree for any area based on site and tree habit.
•  The very same books arborists and urban foresters use as guides to recommend trees for planting.
•  Dirr is not timid about assessing a tree's value - good or bad.
Cons  •  Some critics suggest the books are big on pictures but "shallow" on content with minimal comments on trees.
The Bottom Line - Dr. Michael A. Dirr, Professor of Horticulture at the University of Georgia, has compiled arguably two of the most useful (and beautiful) books on landscape trees available. Widely used by arborists and urban foresters, Trees and Shrubs and Trees and Shrubs for Warm Climates describe the most appropriate woody plants to plant under conditions defined by site location and desired characteristics demanded by the planter.

Mike Dirr uses over 3,000 of his own color photographs in two unique encyclopedias to document tree and shrub habits and details including flowers, fruit, bark and fall color. The photos are of excellent quality and come from Dirr's 20 years of knowing where exceptional exhibit plants are located and how to compose the perfect shot for illustrations of habitat and form.

Durr not only provides information on most of North America's favorite woody plants but introduces the reader to many new and unfamiliar trees that can be found as natives or as procurable cultivars and varieties. If you are a plant enthusiast, this book is THE grand map leading to many more fascinating arboreal discoveries.

Both books include a "Selecting Plants for Specific Characteristics or Purposes" section. You can actually "discover" that perfect tree by looking for flower color and smell; size and habit/shape; tolerance to salt, drought and heat; commercial popularity; by bark and fall leaf color. You literally custom build a tree for the location.

Two great books for tree lovers!
