Smooth Solomon's Seal - Polygonatum biflorum
This 2 to 3 foot long, arching herb has greenish-yellow flowers that appear in April and May. The plant ranges from New York to Florida. The root or rhizome is jointed. A distinctive scar is left by breaking this root at the joint and is said to resemble the official seal of King Solomon. The rhizomes were also used by colonists and Indians as a starchy food.
