Fringe tree or Old-Man's-Beard - Chionanthus virginicus
This small tree is one of the last trees to bear new leaves in the spring. It almost appears dead until leaves and flowers appear. The flowers are borne in white fringe like clusters in April and May to be followed by dark blue berries. The flowers are 1" long with many hanging loosely on slender stalks in "threes". The flower is very fragrant.
