Good quail hunting requires periodic plowing, disking, and/or burning of the forest and field property. These practices will set back vegetative succession and help keep ground conditions suitable for quail. Quail have to have a forest where early-successional habitats are maintained and fire is a necessary tool for this.
It is also wise to protect scattered clumps of blackberry, honeysuckle, shrubs, and pioneer species of trees including persimmon, dogwood, sassafras, or cherry. These are some of the most preferred woody plant foods for quail. Also, clumps of vines, shrubs, or saplings are often sanctuaries for quail using old fields.
