There are many types of machines that "lift" seedlings into position for an operator to place in tubs. Whole-bed lifters are utilized to safeguard the fibrous root system and associated mycorrhizae during transplanting. New lifter technology has improved to the point where it can take as few as three people to lift and remove seedlings.

"This operator sits in what we call the "hot seat". The seat travels the entire width of the harvester on rollers and he is in constant motion when harvesting."
