The forest of hemlock, birch, beech, oak and maple covers a unique spot where fog is a frequent visitor and snow can stay in rock pockets through June. The temperate rainforest conditions here make for a grand display of ferns and mosses. Lichens cover much of the exposed rocks.

Development of Beartown park has been minimal in order to preserve and protect the natural but fragile ecosystem. An elaborate boardwalk has been provided for easy access. Interpretive signs along the boardwalk guide visitors and provide insights concerning the ecology of the area. The park is open daily from April to October, and may be seen during the closed season by contacting the Superintendent of nearby Droop Mountain Battlefield State Park.
