Steve Nix/About Forestry
Hickories are almost exclusively native to North America. They once existed in Europe and the Mediterranean in preglacial periods. The name hickory is derived from the Algonquin indian word pohickory. You will find that the hickory and oak range runs through most of the eastern portion of North America.
Hickories, along with aspens, birches, cottonwood and some ashes are rich in carotenoids but not in anthocyanins. The pignut hickory, one of the most beautiful hickories in autumn, has lustrous green leaves that turn gorgeous, often brilliant yellow in fall color.
