The American chestnut has been virtually wiped-out since forester Hermann Merkel discovered a disease called the Asian Blight Fungus in the Bronx Zoo in 1904. Native chestnuts now exist mostly as stump sprouts from the original fungus-blighted trees. I provide you with a pictorial of remnant chestnut sprouts I have found.More on Asian Blight Fungus
