Duckweed in Swamp

From Steve Nix, About.com

Duckweed has received some bad press, often viewed as a nuisance and commonly mistaken for algae.

In fact, duckweed is an indicator that excessive nutrients exist in the water but doesn't contribute to water quality problems. The macrophytic plant improves water quality by removing phosphorus and nitrogen from the water and by naturally filtering unwanted matter in the water.
Duckweed growth, instead of algae, is very desirable since algae introduces problems associated with water use including nervous system toxins, plugging water treatment filters and almost all algae will cause taste and odor problems in water. Duckweed will out compete algae in a natural swamp.
