Swamp Sunflower in Tanic Water

Narrowleaf Sunflower Helianthus angustifolius

Water in many southern swamps looks like a tea and can have a very dark brown color. Even though it might look unclean, it can actually be pure and safe to drink. The tanin color comes from the tanic acid in the water (the acid comes from plant material including the cypress root) which makes the water dark. The water also looks a lot like a mirror when the sun reflects on it.
