Trees of Windsor Ruin, A Mississippi Plantation

From Steve Nix, About.com

This Mississippi home called Windsor was built by Smith Coffee Daniell II, a plantation owner and the son of a Indian fighter turned farmer and landowner. In 1861, just weeks after Windsor's completion, Mr. Daniell died at the age of 34 leaving a wife and three children.

Windsor survived the American Civil War and became a prominent landmark along the Mississippi River. Mark Twain wrote of its elegance in "Life on the Mississippi". Windsor was tragically destroyed by accidental fire in 1890 and all records and photos of the mansion were lost.

Windsor's ruins have appeared in several motion pictures including Raintree County starring Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift.

I have created a photo gallery of trees that grow at the Windsor Ruin. Several of these trees were growing near the estate before the fire. Windsor ruin represents the end of the Southern plantation economy and the downfall of the old confederate south after the American Civil War.
