The Bottom Line

PersonaliTrees is a picture book you will either completely understand or scratch your head over, either like or dislike - probably no in-between readers here. The book is dedicated to personal hardship and ultimate death. It is a ponderers' book but not ponderous and very easy to read.

Pros

  • A quick read but with short brain-grabbing blasts of imagery that gives one pause.
  • The book goes beyond capturing a tree's form. It describes the human condition using tree imagery.

Cons

  • I'm skeptical of the idea that "trees are sentient beings" with personalities.

Description

  • Complete title is PersonaliTrees: Let the Human Spirit Awaken in the Presence of Trees
  • Publisher: Findhorn Press, Genre: Spirituality, New Age, Pages: 112, hardback
  • Author: Joan Klostermann-Ketels

Guide Review - Book Review: PersonaliTrees

The author, Joan Klostermann-Ketels, is not a tree professional but an expert on the human spirit and knows a lot about human expression. I have a new-found admiration for her interpretation of the anthropomorphic tree. Joan takes nearly 100 tree pictures and gives each tree an expression and a personality: this is a Flamboyant tree or a Resolute one, a Haunted tree or Heartbroken one. She offers the ultimate alternate perception of her tree subjects.

Joan suggests that trees are "sentient beings" with their own personalities and traits. I want to believe she says this tongue-in-cheek and that she actually is primarily describing the human condition in its major forms. Still, she has photographed these trees, some living, some dead, some dying and suggests we take from them a personality. With each tree, she provides a trait along with a grand quote by a major historical figure or writer.
