Just south and to the east of the Pool is the North Meadow. The North Meadow, with its 16-acres of lawn and ballfields, has the largest open space in Central Park. But the meadow is surrounded with trees to include American elm.

I was lucky enough to be in Central Park and at North Meadow just as the American elm seeds were at their most beautiful. Forgetting about the tree, I took a picture of the eye-catching and pink-red-dotted white seed.

American elm is the most popular of urban shade trees. This tree was planted along downtown city streets for decades and Central Park is richly blessed with the tree, maybe. The tree has had major problems with Dutch elm disease and is now out of favor when considered for urban tree planting. The vase-shaped form and gradually arching limbs make it a favorite to plant on city streets. Read more about: American Elm
