Hardwood

By Steve Nix, About.com

Definition: A tree with leaves that are broad, flat and thin, generally deciduous - both simple and compound - that shed annually as opposed to coniferous or needled trees that have some foliage all the time. These trees are sometimes called hardwood even though wood hardness varies among the hardwood species and some are actually softer than some softwoods.
