Forest Mapping and Surveying Using Global Positioning Systems
Forest Surveying Methods - Distances and Angles
Foresters and landowners rarely need to initially survey forest property. They are, however, required to find corners, retrace old lines and reconstruct property boundaries. Here are the elements of forest surveying including using a compass to site an angle and determine horizontal distances.
The United States Public Land Survey
With some exceptions, the entire United states is subdivided into sections, townships and ranges. This system of townships was developed by the Public Land Survey and maintained by the United States Geological Survey. Surveyors and foresters regularly use this 24-mile tract system to define and delineate land area and boundaries.
