What species of pine is considered best for pine straw mulching and landscaping?

By Steve Nix, About.com Guide

Question: What species of pine is considered best for pine straw mulching and landscaping?
Answer: Raking and baling is much easier when you have long pine needles. A short needled pine tree is nearly impossible to prepare correctly for handling, transporting and spreading. The best pines to use are members of the southern yellow pine group - particularly slash pine and longleaf pine.
