This Stewartia malacodendron, growing near the Northwest River in Southern Virginia, is a true coastal plain plant. It blooms best in moist but well drained forest soils. The flowering tree prefers partial shade and will not do well with "wet feet".

The stewartia genus, related to the evergreen camellias, honors John Stuart (1713-92), also known as the Earl of Bute and a patron of botany. The malacodendron species name is Greek for soft tree, referring to the silky hairs covering the lower leaf surface.
