Tree Basics

Tree Basics

The Bottom Line

Dr. Shigo explains the complex and fascinating mysteries of how a tree works. Even foresters and botanists will find this helpful for explaining to others the biology of trees. For that reason Tree Basics has been placed in all New Hampshire schools. (Paperback; Shigo and Tree Assoc.; ISBN: 094356316X)
Pros
  • A 40-page, fully illustrated tree anatomy short course that covers all the basics.
  • There is no other book on tree biology with so much information on so few pages.
  • Dr. Shigo is a preeminent tree biologist and subject matter expert.
  • A "must get" first book for learning tree biology and anatomy.
Cons
  • Topics are poorly organized with no table of contents.
  • The book is an unpolished black and white publication with less than exciting graphics.
  • The readability can get in the way of its great content.

Description

  • "Tree Basics" presents an excellent explanation of tree decay and compartmentalization.
  • A complete tree anatomy lesson on how bark, roots, leaves and flowers work.
  • Tree care advice including how to prune correctly.

Guide Review - Tree Basics

Dr. Alex Shigo, preeminent expert on tree physiology, has written this simple 40-page book for people who enjoy and manage trees. Although somewhat ackward in presentation and continuity it provides more tree biology on fewer pages than any book I can recommend.
