Tree with Good Growth

Steve Nix/About Forestry
Growth is an essential requirement for a healthy tree. Simple as that. Trees that express new extensions of terminal buds are exhibiting signs of vigor.

Simon Toomer suggests you look for "regular and clear spacing between successive years'growth nodes." Longer spaces between nodes can mean regular seasonal growth spurts. This spacing usually indicates that a tree is healthy and growing at a desirable rate.

If you are purchasing the tree during the growing season, look for green shoots of new growth at the tips of limbs and branches.
