The Forest and Tree Phobias

Friday June 24, 2005
Hylophobia
-"fear of forests" - There are phobic people who just can't enter a forest. There are many reasons: Reading Grimm's Hansel, Gretel and the Big Bad Wolf, watching the Blair Witch Project, snakes and spiders, getting lost, poison plants, lightning, bats, ticks...
Dendrophobia
- "fear of trees" - Tom Kimmerer, tree and forest blogger, suggests that there is a new "outbreak of dendrophobia following last years spate of severe hurricanes." Property owners are removing large trees in record numbers.
Silvaphobia
- "fear of cutting trees" - According to the Catskill Forest Association, silvaphobia arises from two separate issues: fear of contractors and fear of cutting trees. A tree lover or owner dreads what may happen after harvest and feels the forest will never be the same after cutting.
