Memorial Day Events Start With Charcoal

Keep in mind that Memorial Day is a Monday in late May set aside to remember all U.S. military personnel who have died in the service of their country. But keep in mind that it has also become a day many people kickstart their summer vacations and pull out the outdoor grill. More charcoal is burned on Memorial Day than nearly any other day of the year.

In honor of charcoal's (a forest product) biggest day, I offer a piece on charcoal called Making Charcoal: A Startup Business Opportunity. The modern commercial process of making charcoal is to heat wood with little or no air present. In the United States, wood is the primary material used for charcoal and is generally procured in the form of residue like sawmill slabs and edgings. Sawmills love to find users of this material because of environment problems with burning and disposal.

How much charcoal is in one cord of wood?
