Darwin, in his famous "Tree of Life" metaphor, set the stage for the recently developed science of Ecology. His 200 year old tree imagery of life developing as a branching tree provided the path to today's understanding of how species are interdependent on each other for survival. This is particularly true in our most visible ecosystem - the forest.
A forest ecosystem is very complex and scientists have to understand and combine their knowledge of biotic and abiotic conditions to study it.
