The Perfect Little Saw

Small Chainsaw Review

By Steve Nix, About.com

This list represents a sub-sample of a broad array of small chainsaws. There are many others you can choose from that are not on this list. But these saws are arguably the best for all but the professional woodcutter as a first saw around the yard and woodlot.

This review is based on company reliability, professional arborist popularity, and a saw shop expert's opinion. All of these chainsaws would make a great first small saw purchase. I've tried to include web site addresses, a saw profile and national telephone numbers. All Quotes are from an aging Arbor Age review called “Chain Saws for 2000”. I have updated the saw information and profiles and made changes needed when models have been discontinued.

Dolmar PS3300TH- “You will find they…transformed their logging knowledge into arbor power”

Echo CS-340 - “It truly packed a whalop when it came time to do limb and trim work.”; 800-673-1558

Husqvarna 335XP series - “My first impression of this was wow, what a little powerhouse.”; 800-HUSKY-62

Jonsered CS 2145- Was talking about the similar but discontinued Pro35 “Known for its reliability and durability, this little saw has that and more.; 800-258-7123

RedMax G310TS- “If you have never heard of this outfit, I do believe you will be seeing more of them”; 770-381-5147

Solo 636- “This is quite a nice saw with plenty of power.”; 757-245-4228

Stihl 020T- “This particular unit cuts extremely smooth and had plenty of power in reserve”; 800-GO-STIHL

John Deere CS36 Pro - I picked this "little" model to replace the discontinued Tanaka TCS3401 which was a part of the original review. This saw is an economical alternative to the more expensive saws and a growing favorite!
